KUALA LUMPUR: The two-day Bersih 4 rally ended peacefully at midnight as scheduled with the thousands of participants dispersing in an orderly manner under the watchful eyes of the police.
Although the police received 27 reports and opened five investigation papers, the situation was under control throughout. The protesters who had gathered around Dataran Merdeka since yesterday afternoon ended the rally singing the national anthem and doing a countdown to National Day 2015, led by chief organiser Maria Chin Abdullah.
They started to disperse five minutes past midnight. Workers involved in final preparations for National Day celebrations rushed against time to get their job done once the area was cleared.
Dataran Merdeka was cordoned off and closed to traffic the past week in preparation for the celebrations, but the huge presence of Bersih 4 supporters in the area over the past two days had disrupted work. Roads leading to Dataran Merdeka are expected to reopen at 2am.
